GRT-INC.COM > Technology - GRT, Inc. Technical Product Review

GRT's product is a chemical transformation process based on a solid cataloreactant.

The same basic process can be applied to make a wide variety of important fuels and chemicals; it is thus "a platform technology".
In the GRT process, natural gas components or other hydrocarbon feedstocks are first activated by conversion to halogenated (e.g. brominated) intermediate compounds. This first step transforms the molecules of the previously stable raw material to a new active intermediate containing bromine.
In the second step (metathesis), the new active intermediate can be selectively reacted with a catalyst or an oxygen-containing solid material which is both a catalyst and reactant, the cataloreactant (Figure below).
GRT has identified specific proprietary solid materials containing metal and oxygen atoms (metal oxides), including common minerals, which react with the brominated intermediates and exchange the oxygen in the solid for the bromine in the reactant releasing a product molecule and immobilizing bromine on the solid.

The same basic process steps are used in producing a variety of alcohols, ethers, olefins, epoxides, and fuel molecules. It is the specific composition and form of the solid metal oxide cataloreactants and the specific reaction conditions that selectively allows the desired reaction to proceed, while restricting undesirable side reactions, for example:

methane gasoline, jet fuel, ethylene, propylene, and aromatics
   ethane ethanol, ethylene, ethylene glycol
   propane propylene glycol

It is the specific composition and form of the solid cataloreactant that allows the bromine to be fully recovered for reuse over large numbers of regeneration cycles.

The GRT Zone Reactor

There are unique engineering process advantages made possible by the use of a solid cataloreactant which can translate into significant reductions in plant capital cost while increasing safety. In particular, GRT has developed and patented a specialized "Zone Reactor" configuration that allows further simplification of the engineering process for certain chemical products. The Zone Reactor can eliminate the need for bromine to ever leave the single reactor vessel and retains the solids in one location.

GRT Zone Reactor

The novelties of the GRT process chemistry embodied in our issued and pending patents include:

Use of specific combinations of solid materials as cataloreactants to produce specific chemical products.
In situ neutralization of the produced halogen acid (HBr).
Complete regeneration and reuse of the halogen.
Use of the cataloreactant in a unique "Zone Reactor" to simplify the process and reduce the capital cost.
Facilitation of modular designs for use in medium and small size gasfields and for offshore associated gas.
